Play by Spark
Play by Spark is a Bluetooth-enabled rugby ball that tracks how — and how long — you’ve played with it. It then connects to a mobile app that converts this to screen time and a rewards programme.
The project is part of Spark’s mission to help all kiwis take advantage of new and emerging tech, and specifically helps families balance active playtime with screen time.

Families from across New Zealand have put our smart ball to the test. For three months they took on a series of challenges that were designed to help them manage screen time.
Leading NZ child psychologist Dr Emma Woodward developed a trial programme to help Kiwi families achieve a healthy balance of screen time and outside playtime. She reviewed the process and offered tactics on how to negotiate tantrums and other balance-based wizardry.
